Population Growth Parameters of a Reintroduced Trumpeter Swan Flock , Seney

چکیده

—Once an abundant and conspicuous presence in wetlands across much of north-central North America, Trumpeter Swan ( Cygnus buccinator ) poplulations were decimated in the midto late 1800s by a combination of market hunting, subsistence hunting, and habitat loss. Since then, restoration has focused primarily on reintroduction efforts in which captive-reared birds are released and then monitored. From 1991 to 1993, 44 birds were released into Seney National Wildlife Refuge (Schoolcraft County, Michigan) in a multi-agency attempt to enhance the breeding population of this species in the Upper Great Lakes region. To provide information useful to swan restoration efforts elsewhere, this paper summarizes 14 years of Trumpeter Swan occupancy and productivity at Seney. In doing so, we document the first substantial inter-annual decline in swans on the Refuge and provide evidence that suggests birds may now be dispersing onto other lakes and wetlands in the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We also present information from which we infer processes regulating swan numbers and rates of productivity and discuss both the continued need for monitoring and the need for research to examine the effects swans might have on other components of aquatic ecosystems at the Refuge. Applying Cooperative Distributed Problem Solving Methods to Trumpeter Swan Management

We are developing a decision support system in an effort to assist biologists who are managing habitats for the Rocky Mountain population of trumpeter swans. Swan management is a domain that is ecologically complex, and this complexity is compounded by spatial and temporal issues. We are focused on providing decision support that allows managers to develop habitat management plans for local sit...

Empirical Evaluation of Decision Support Systems: Concepts and an Example for Trumpeter Swan Management

Decision support systems are often not empirically evaluated, especially the underlying modelling components. This can be attributed to such systems necessarily being designed to handle complex and poorly structured problems and decision making. Nonetheless, evaluation is critical and should be focused on empirical testing whenever possible. Verification and validation, in combination, comprise...

Developing population models for guiding reintroductions of extirpated bird species back to the New Zealand mainland

Population models are useful tools to guide management as they allow us to project growth and persistence of wildlife populations under different scenarios. Nevertheless, good data are needed to produce reliable models, and this requirement is problematic in some situations. North Island saddlebacks (Philesturnus rufusater) were reintroduced to Boundary Stream Mainland Island in September 2004,...

Reproductive Health and Performance of the Florida Flock of Introduced Whooping Cranes

We retrospectively examined the reproductive parameters of 122 breeding-age whooping cranes (Grus americana) in a reintroduced flock in central Florida from 1992 to 2007. The flock performed poorly when compared with an existing wild flock for all reproductive parameters when controlled for age. Pairs first formed in 1995, nested in 1999, and the first chick fledged in 2002. By 2007, 19 of 63 c...

Evaluating Genetic Diversity of Whooper Swan (Cygnus cygnus, Linnaeus, 1758) Colonies in Iran

Whooper swans have two old and new populations, the new population has reported since 2007. The current study aimed to investigate the genetic structure of this species and compare their gene pool, especially the new population. For this purpose, 110 samples from Iran and four European countries were analyzed, using six microsatelite loci. In addition to the samples of the emerging population i...
